HISTORY OF CEF IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
![]() Jesse Irvin Overholtzer, founder of CEF, was born in 1877 in the Sacramento Valley in California. Growing up in a religious family, at the age of 12, Jesse was convicted of his own sin and sought xouncel from his mother. He was told he was too young. It wasn't untol Overholtzer was in college htta he heard the Gospel and trusted Christ as his Savior. Later as a pastor, Mr Overholtzer relized children can be saved while he was reading one of Chares Spurgeon's sermons and searching the Scriptures. In 1937, at the age of 60, he began the ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship, Inc.
In those early years, children were taught in neighborhood Bible Classes by volunteer teachers trained to reach childrean for Christ. CEF of Northern California was officially chartered on January 1 1953 and has continued to reach boys and girls in each new generation. Today, there are eighteen local CEF chapters in Northern California.
